You can prepare for spring vegetable planting by “vegucating” yourself at the St. Tammany Master Gardener Seminar. There will be featured lectures on new and improved “veggies,“ growing mirlitons on the North Shore, and learning to grow veggies organically. The seminar, “You Need a Good Vegucation,” is co-sponsored by the LSU AgCenter and the St. Tammany Master Gardeners. The event will be from 9am to 3pm, February 22nd. It will be held at the First Baptist Church of Covington, 1633 Highway 1085, in Covington. There is a lineup of professional speakers to make your spring veggie garden a great success. Dr. Kiki Fontenot, a vegetable specialist, will talk about new and improved varieties of vegetables. Rodney Cross will tell how to grow vegetables in containers. Weeding problems will be addressed by Dr. Ron Strahan of the LSU AgCenter. Henry Schnexnayder, of the Department of Forestry, will speak about how to grow organically. And Dr. Lance Hill will show how to grow mirlitons. In addition to the five speakers, there will be table top clinics with master gardeners, presenting garden related information. The presenters include Janice Roussel, on vegetables from seed to harvest; Art Scott, with do it yourself irrigation; Donald Levere, on frugal gardening; and Stan Gremillion, with soil sampling.
